This Week in Washington


Senate: The Senate continued processing nominations including John Phelan as Secretary of the Navy, Christopher Landau as Deputy Secretary of State, Michael Kratsios and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Jayanta Bhattacharya as Director of the National Institutes of Health, Martin Makary as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, James Bishop as Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Aaron Reitz as Assistant Attorney General, Michael Faulkender as Deputy Secretary of Treasury, and Paul Lawrence as Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs. They passed Congressional Review Acts  S.J.Res.18, to rescind the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection’s (CFPB) rule “Overdraft Lending: Very Large Financial Institutions" and H.J.Res.25, to rescind the Internal Revenue Service rule "Gross Proceeds Reporting by Brokers That Regularly Provide Services Effectuating Digital Asset Sales" Lending: Very Large Financial Institutions"


House: The House passed the Defending Education Transparency and Ending Rouge Regimes Engaging in Nefarious Transactions Act (H.R.1048) and Congressional Review Acts H.J.Res.24, to rescind the Department of Energy’s rule "Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Walk-In Coolers and Walk-In Freezers" and H.J.Res.75 to rescind the Department of Energy’s rule "Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Commercial Refrigerators, Freezers, and Refrigerator-Freezers.”


Trump Administration: On March 26, President Trump signed an Executive Order placing a 25 percent tariff on imports of cars and light trucks. The tariff will also apply to automobile parts and will start on April 3. President Trump also signed an Executive Order on March 25, implementing a 25 percent tariff on good from countries purchasing Venezuelan oil.

Senate:  The Senate is expected to continue processing nominations including Matthew Whitaker to be the Permanent Representative on the Council of NATO.

 

House: The House is expected to consider the No Rouge Ruling Act (H.R.1526), the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (H.R.22), and Congressional Review Acts S.J.Res.18, to rescind the CFPB’s rule “Overdraft Lending: Very Large Financial Institutions" and S.J.Res.28, the CFPB’s rule “Defining Larger Participants of a Market for General-Use Digital Consumer Payment Applications.”
