This Week in Washington

 

Senate: The Senate continued processing nominations and confirmed Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education, Todd Blanche as Deputy Attorney General, and Troy Edgar as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. The Senate passed the following Congressional Review Act resolutions repealing regulations: S.J.Res.28, to rescind the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection’s rule “Defining Larger Participants of a Market for General-Use Digital Consumer Payment Applications”; and  S.J.Res.3 to rescind the Internal Revenue Service’s rule "Gross Proceeds Reporting by Brokers That Regularly Provide Services Effectuating Digital Asset Sales".

 

House: The House passed the following Congressional Review Act resolutions repealing regulations:  S.J.Res.11,  to rescind the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s rule ‘‘Protection of Marine Archaeological Resources’’; H.J.Res. 42,  to rescind the Department of Energy’s rule “Energy Conservation Program for Appliance Standards: Certification Requirements, Labeling Requirements, and Enforcement Provisions for Certain Consumer Products and Commercial Equipment”; and H.J.Res. 61, to rescind the Environmental Protection Agency’s rule ‘‘National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants: Rubber Tire Manufacturing’’.

 

Trump Administration: On March 6, President Trump signed two amendments to his tariff orders for Mexico and Canada. The orders agreed to tariff exemptions from Canada and Mexico for goods that enter the U.S. duty-free under USMCA until April 2, when they will be subject to 25% tariffs.

 

Next Week in Washington

 

Senate: The Senate will reconvene on Monday, March 10 and is expected to continue processing nominations including Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor, Steven Bradbury as Deputy Secretary of Transportation, and Abigail Slater as Assistant Attorney General. They are expected to consider the HALT Fentanyl Act (S.331).

 

House: The House will reconvene on Monday, March 10, and is expected to consider the Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Enforcement Act (H.R.1156) and H.J.Res.25, to rescind the Internal Revenue Service’s rule "Gross Proceeds Reporting by Brokers That Regularly Provide Services Effectuating Digital Asset Sales".

 

Government Funding: Congress has until midnight on March 14 to find a solution to fund the government as the Continuing Resolution passed in December expires. It is believed that the House and Senate will take up a Continuing Resolution that funds the government until September 30, the end of Fiscal Year 2025.
