This Week in Washington


Senate: The Senate continued process nominations including Ambassadors to China, United Kingdom, Turkey, and Italy.  They passed Congressional Review Acts (CRAs) H.J.Res.42 to rescind the Department of Energy (DOE) rule updating certification, labeling, and enforcement requirements for consumer products and commercial equipment, H.J.Res.75 to rescind the DOE rule prescribing energy conservation standards for refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, and freezers, and S.J.Res.31 to rescind the Environmental Protection Agency  (EPA) rule that allows a “major source” of hazardous air pollutants to reclassify as an “area source” after acting to limit emissions.


House: The House passed CRAs H.J.Res.60 to rescind the National Park Service rule prohibiting off road and all-terrain vehicles on 24 miles of roads at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, H.J.Res.78 to rescind the Fish and Wildlife Service rule to provide endangered species status to the longfin smelt, a fish found in California waters, and H.J.Res.87, H.J.Res.88, and H.J.Res.89 to rescind EPA rules granting a federal waiver to California to ban gasoline-powered cars by 2035.


Trump Administration: On May 1, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Biased Media.  The order ceases the use of direct or indirect funding to NPR and PBS to the maximum extent allowed under the law. It also directs the Federal Communications Commission to investigate whether NPR and PBS have engaged in “unlawful discrimination.”


Next Week in Washington


Senate: The Senate will reconvene Monday, May 5 and will continue processing nominations, including Frank Bisignano to be Commissioner of the Social Security Administration. They are expected to consider CRA H.J.Res.61, to rescind the EPA rule regulating hazardous air pollutants from tire manufacturing.


House: The House will reconvene Monday, May 5 and will consider the Department and Homeland Security Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act (H.R.881) and the Gulf of America Act of 2025 (H.R.276)
