Biden Administration – President Biden issued an initial National Security Memorandum (NSM) on Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting AI's critical role in national security and foreign policy. This directive aims to establish the U.S. as a global leader in developing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI technologies, harnessing advanced tools for security purposes while upholding democratic values and human rights. The NSM directs actions to advance these goals by strengthening chip supply chains, enhancing cybersecurity, and expanding AI research beyond large companies to include a diverse range of researchers. It also designates the AI Safety Institute as the key point of contact within the government to improve AI security across sectors.
