Senate: The Senate continued processing nominations, including the second package of Trump Administration nominations by a vote of 51-46. They failed to reach the 60-vote threshold to pass legislation to provide short-term government funding, leading to a government shutdown that began on October 1. The Senate is scheduled to vote again today, October 3, on the funding legislation.

House: The House was in recess.

Trump Administration:  On September 30, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled, ‘Unlocking Cures for Pediatric Cancer with Artificial Intelligence.” The Order promotes the use of health data with AI to improve clinical research in order to lead to cures and prevention for childhood cancer. As a result of the lapse in appropriations and resulting federal government shutdown, federal agencies implemented shutdown plans, furloughed all but essential employees, and additionally sent Reduction In Force (RIF) notices to certain furloughed employees in positions supporting programs for which funding has not yet been renewed.
